TITLE:                       S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: CALL OF RIPYAT
GENRE:                  HORROR
RELEASE DATE:      2 FEBRUARY 2010

STALKER: Call of Pripyat

GSC Game World delivers its most stable and playable version of the Zone yet. Call of Pripyat the game is structured like a role-playing title, with primary missions and quest rewards and a trading system where you'll repair guns, buy ammunition and medical supplies, wrap cuts with bandages, and upgrade your gear the further you go. Though it's not quite as surprising as the original, due to there's no leveling or experience point systems, however, so the power of your character is more directly determined by the kinds of equipment you're carrying around. It's still a standout game that deserves to be given a chance by anyone. There aren't many titles able to offer up such an affecting atmosphere mixed with enjoyable mechanics, and even if some bits of the game remain uneven, it's an experience that will stick with you long after it's over.

TITLE:                                 MASS EFFECT 2
GENRE:                  ACTION
RELEASE DATE:      26 JANUARY 2010

Mass Effect2

Games like Mass Effect 2 don't come around often enough. If you look at any aspect you can be sure it's great. It's extremely personal while still retaining a sense of epic sweeping scale. The combat and mission designs are outstanding. The visuals, voice acting, soundtrack, and direction are miles ahead of the competition. Perhaps most extraordinarily, Mass Effect 2 manages to fulfill its incredible ambition while only suffering from very few technical flaws. The only real forewarning that should be mentioned is that some of the revelations and plot twists won't be quite as powerful if you haven't played Mass Effect 1, but that isn't any reason to skip this fantastic game.

TITLE:                                 FABLE II
GENRE:                  ADVENTURE
RELEASE DATE:      5 JANUARY 2010

Fable II

Fable II begins more than 500 years after the events of the original. You don't have to know a thing about the first Fable to enjoy the sequel, but there are numerous references to the past. There are plenty of surprises waiting for those fond of the first Fable; consider it a reward for having played the original. In Fable II, you play as a new character -- either male or female -- who begins life as a street urchin and eventually becomes savior of Albion. The main story is brief and has little in the way of plot. It's about as basic a hero's tale as can be fashioned. It's the atmosphere and elements outside the main storyline that prove most rewarding.

TITLE:                                 DANTE’S INFERNO
GENRE:                  ACTION ADVENTURE
RELEASE DATE:      9 FEBRUARY 2010

Dante's Inferno

Dante’s Inferno takes a daring, visually impressive take on a literary classic and adds in an intriguing action focus to create a different kind of action title. The visual style sets it apart from other games with its vivid and mature portrayal of Hell. Inferno manages to sharply bring to "unlife" Wayne Barlow's disturbing vision of the circles of hell and the creatures that reside there. Each circle has a unique and memorable style, from the substantial amounts of sexual imagery in the Lust level to the circle of Greed, which looks like a gold foundry. You are at the mercy of a fixed camera, but once it's loaded, Dante's Inferno streams the entire game without a glitch. Ambient sound is strong as well, from the lamenting cries of the lost, to the screams of the creatures as they are killed. Once you've defeated the game, you can replay it in Resurrection mode, which allows you to carry over your skills and acquired souls to a new game on a higher difficulty level or to take your skills into a timed endurance mode called Gates of Hell.

TITLE:                                 BIOSHOCK 2
GENRE:                  ACTION
RELEASE DATE:      9 FEBRUARY 2010

Bioshock 2

It will be a familiar experience for anyone that played the original, but BioShock 2's improvements to gameplay and it’s more focused storyline make for a game that's more playable and easier to digest. Some of the sense of awe and mystery is lost in transition, but the strength of the setting and more interesting implementation of moral choice make for an experience that's more consistent and rewarding. Someone looking for a first-person shooter that offers more than flat, clichéd characters and copy-and-paste supersoldier plots, one that attempts to establish a sense of right and wrong and loops you into the decision making process, and one that's set in one of the most vividly realized settings around should pick up BioShock 2. It's a game in which story, setting, and gameplay are expertly blended to create an experience that's as thought provoking as it is entertaining.

TITLE:          ASSASSIN’S CREED II: DISCOVERY
GENRE:                  ACTION
RELEASE DATE:   Jan 7, 2010

Assassin's Creed II: Discovery

Discovery tells a great story that fits nicely in Ezio's timeline. You move through stage after stage of Renaissance intrigue, alternating between kill missions and quick chases as you attempt to rescue your assassin brethren from the Inquisition. Discovery works a bit better when it slows down for assassination missions. Here, you must be methodical about avoiding detection. If you are spotted four times, the animus rejects you. Within the game there is an “attack” button provided. If you operate the button correctly for example if you race toward an enemy that is looking away and you press the attack button, Ezio lunges and drives his wrist blade into the target's neck before they know what's happening. If you approach a guard with his sword out, you use the attack button in something of a rhythm game to survive a sword fight. It works pretty well, especially when moving into sword clashes. Play the game with headphones to truly appreciate it.

Halo 3: ODST

Halo 3: ODST Boxshot

You wake up all alone in a hostile city. Pockets of enemies are hiding in the nearly pitch-black environment and your allies are nowhere to be found. In the opening moments of Halo 3: ODST, you are vulnerable and aimless--two elements that have never been explored in a Halo game before. These quiet, moody scenes flow into the spirited, high-energy battles the franchise is known for, but this feeling of desolation never fully dissolves. ODST is an awesome entry in the franchise because it not only showcases the elements that have made previous games in the series so explosively fun, but it also introduces a handful of new ideas that add a unique spin on the classic formula. The most exhilarating of the new features is the Firefight mode, a cooperative battle against a never-ending swarm of covenant soldiers that is as intense and rewarding as anything that has appeared in the series. Whether you love the solitude of the single-player
campaign, the camaraderie of cooperative encounters, or the blood lust of multiplayer competion, Halo 3: ODST is a fantastic package.

Section 8 Boxshot

Section 8

Far away from the prying eyes of the war-fearing citizens who make up the bulk of peaceful society, a battalion of armor-clad soldiers stages needless battles in desolate environments. Section 8 is a generic look at the struggles futuristic space marines will have to go through, but despite its uninspired trappings, the intergalactic fights are unpredictable and chaotic, and the diverse array of objectives gives more thoughtful players a chance to help their team in ways other than unmitigated destruction. There are a few missed opportunities in Section 8, such as vehicles that are all but worthless and environments that are too large for their own good, but the main elements are enjoyable, though not quite gripping. With a dull aesthetic and heavy reliance on gameplay techniques found in other first-person shooters, Section 8 struggles to stand out from the pack, but the engaging matches and satisfying gun battles make this online-focused game worth playing.

Dead Space Extraction Boxshot

Dead Space Extraction

When the miners on the remote planet Aegis VII uncover and activate an alien artifact referred to as the marker, they unwittingly set into motion a chain of events that proves to be their end. As the colony tears itself apart due to the relic's maddening effects, four unlikely allies band together to fight their way free from the planet and the horrific monsters known as necromorphs that begin to appear. As you follow their escape to apparent freedom aboard the USG Ishimura mining ship, you roam its familiar, haunted corridors and unearth all manner of intriguing information about the events that took place there, the truth about the marker, and the cult-like Church of Unitology. Though there are a number of in-game cutscenes for conversation and exposition, action is always just around the corner.
The hideous necromorphs are ceaseless in their single-minded desire to consume and convert living flesh, and unlike with traditional zombies, headshots don't always take them down. Instead, necromorphs have to be dismembered, and lucky for you, a mining colony and its mothership are chock-full of tools just waiting to be misused for intentional industrial accidents. Most of the weapons from Dead Space return, and they're joined by several newcomers, including the P-SEC pistol, the arc welder, and the rivet gun. Necromorphs tend to be slow and deliberate in nature, and because their limbs are your targets, you must match their careful pace. Every shot count, because while you can have up to four firearms at any time, only the relatively weak rivet gun--your default weapon--has unlimited ammo.

.MySims Agents Boxshot
MySims Agents

The titular agent starts off small in a backwater burg. Without much in the way of villainy to fight, the main character is reduced to being a private detective ferreting out secret admirers and finding lost puppies. When a new supervillain moves to town, sets up shop, and starts digging up the city, though, the Sim Protection Agency is on the job. The agency sets up a new headquarters, deputizes you, and asks you to find out what's going on with this supervillain. This involves a ton of legwork where you run around interviewing witnesses and suspects, track down clues to verify or disprove stories, and get to the bottom of a series of seemingly unrelated cases that end up all being connected.
This departure from the standard MySims gameplay makes for a welcome change. The amount of social interaction with other Sims, which was a big part of previous games, is reduced to merely talking with them about the particulars of a case. You can't make them mad, and in the few instances where there are more verbally aggressive conversational tracks, damage can be quickly corrected by just going through the conversation again. Thus, much of the game involves an adventure game-like search for clues, using a magnifying glass to search for hidden footprints, using a crowbar or a wrench to interact with the environment, or using an ever-increasing arsenal of secret agent gizmos to ferret out the truth. There are some light platforming sequences that won't challenge any but the youngest player and several very enjoyable minigames that must be played when doing such things as analyzing chemicals or fixing a machine.

Spyborgs Boxshot
Spyborgs

When an elite team of cyborg agents takes on a nefarious villain and his army of mechanical goons, there are going to be some serious robot casualties. In Spyborgs, you rack up the robotic death count by battling through hordes of enemies with your cybernetically enhanced arsenal. Though the two-player cooperative action moves at a brisk pace, your enemies aren't very diverse and your moveset is limited. You'll soon get the sense that you've done it all before, and the recommended difficulty is so steep that you actually will be doing it all over and over again. The varied environments help liven things up a little, but the story is standard Saturday-morning boilerplate that fails to add anything of interest. Spyborgs' delivers a good amount of beat-'em-up action, but it is largely devoid of flair or fun.

Enter a military simulation and fight in one of the greatest battles of the Fallout universe – the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders. Gain access to unique armor, weapons, and exotic gadgets while you build and command interactive Strike Teams to win the battle and defeat the Chinese base.

Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-up

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-Up Boxshot

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-Up, you and some friends pick from a roster of beloved characters and proceed to beat the heck out of each other in a diverse array of arenas. Sound familiar? The similarities between this game and the Super Smash Bros. series are clear, from the fast-paced action to the presentation to the announcer's voice. Yet there are a number of notable differences that set Smash-Up apart. Some are positive, like the more-straightforward combat that make it easier to succeed with a variety of characters. Some, like the not-so-sharp visuals and inconsistent victory conditions, are negative. These rough edges keep Smash-Up from making a legitimate bid for the Smash Bros. crown, but it's still an entertaining brawler in its own right.

NHL 2K10 Boxshot

NHL 2K10

It might be time for 2K Sports to think about giving NHL 2K10 for the Nintendo Wii a different name. Even though the arcade hockey game looks to be the same as its Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 siblings, it is actually an entirely different production. Unique Wii Remote controls and a more meticulous treatment of hockey on the ice make this one challenging trip to the rink. The Wii version has clearly received a lot of attention this year, benefiting from enhanced Wii Remote control options via the Wii MotionPlus, the inclusion of all modes of play from its Xbox 360 and PS3 big brothers, fantastic online features, and greatly improved visuals and sound.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Boxshot

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2

Chopping up fiends in the Ninja Gaiden series is inherently satisfying; chopping up fiends with a friend is even better. That's the idea behind Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, the enhanced release of the original Xbox 360 action game on the PlayStation 3. Mind you, not every addition in this new version is an important one. Was anyone truly begging for the ability to jiggle the female leads' enormous breasts using the Sixaxis motion functionality? (Or at least, anyone in his right mind?) But pointless new mechanics aside, Sigma 2 adds three new excellent single-player levels to the campaign featuring three different heroines, each of which is terrific fun to control. Even better, you can join another player online in a substantial number of cooperative arenas, where you'll find double the flash and double the entertainment. This version of Ninja Gaiden II is notably better, and it offers enough extra content that even those who have already played and enjoyed the initial release should consider adding it to their game libraries.

Katamari Forever Boxshot

Katamari Forever

When the original Katamari Damacy first rolled onto the scene in 2004, it turned heads because its unique concept and distinctive sense of style made it entirely unlike anything else out there. Now, five years later, what once seemed wonderfully strange feels familiar to fans of the series, and with Katamari Forever, Namco Bandai seems to be trying to cash in on that familiarity. Katamari Forever is the video game equivalent of a greatest-hits album; among its 34 levels, only three are entirely new, while the rest represent some of the best and most memorable content from earlier games. The lack of new content is disappointing, but this is the strongest set of katamari-rolling craziness ever compiled on a single disc. The Prince and his katamaris look better than ever, making this a good introduction to the series for newcomers and an enjoyable way for diehard fans to revisit the series' best moments.

Pinball Hall of Fame - The Williams Collection Boxshot

Pinball Hall of Fame

Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection was a great package when it was released for the PSP and the Wii last year, and now that it has arrived for the PlayStation 3, it's better than ever. Even if you already own one of the older versions, this one is well worth checking out, not only because the tables look really good in high definition, but also because there are more of them. An extra three tables have been added to the virtual arcade that serves as the game's slightly unwieldy menu system, bringing the total to an impressive 13. Not all of the featured tables can be considered classics, but if the lineup was chosen specifically to offer plenty of variety, then it's most definitely a success. Older tables like 1970's Jive Time bear little resemblance to the likes of Whirlwind and Funhouse, which were released 20 years later, and playing through this collection in chronological order is a fun way to see how Williams' offerings evolved during that time

Need for Speed: Shift Boxshot

Need for Speed: Shift

Need for Speed: Shift is a racing game that tries to do a lot of things, and the good news is that it does most of them well. The bad news is that Shift does very little that other racers haven't done before it, and it excels at nothing. The racing, the car and track selections, the vehicle customization and damage modeling, the career mode, the online play, the opponent AI--all of these things are good, but none of them are great.

NHL 10 Boxshot

NHL 10

Making an arcade hockey game as superb as NHL 09 created one big problem for EA Sports: sky-high expectations. Last year's game was so good that it created an almost impossible act to follow. Good luck trying to top revolutionary improvements made to the on-ice action, controls, and modes of play. Still, NHL 10 sure tries. This is undoubtedly a better game than its predecessor, thanks to a handful of gameplay tweaks, first-person fighting, and a new Be the GM option, but in the grand scheme of things, this is more of a refinement than a full-blown sequel. Anybody who can name the Original Six without checking Google should still buy this outstanding hockey simulation, although owners of NHL 09 might not feel the need to put it at the very top of the shopping list.

MotorStorm Arctic Edge Boxshot
MotorStorm Arctic Edge

Release Date: 29 September 09

The MotorStorm series has already sent you careening along muddy cliffsides and barreling through lava-filled landscapes. Now with MotorStorm Arctic Edge, you can hop in a snow machine and race through drifts of slippery snow. Arctic Edge may be portable, but it otherwise encapsulates all the pros and cons of this series' fast-paced off-road racing. Each course is meticulously crafted, offering an ideal path to the finish line no matter which of its vehicles you prefer, and a swift sense of speed makes navigating your way around these complex tracks a blast. The usual franchise foibles are also in play, such as supersensitive physics that make things feel a bit too out of control. As of this writing, online connection issues are also a problem, so your multiplayer mayhem may be limited to local ad hoc races. Yet like its PlayStation 3 predecessors, MotorStorm Arctic Edge mostly overcomes its flaws by letting you take to the unique courses and get rowdy.

Gran Turismo Boxshot
Gran Turismo

Release date: 01 October 09

More than five years and a couple of title changes after it was announced, Gran Turismo has finally arrived on the PSP. The first handheld iteration of "the real driving simulator" isn't as fully featured as some of its predecessors, and the lack of a structured Career mode is particularly unfortunate. However, with over 800 realistically handling cars of all kinds to put through their paces on 35 impressively varied tracks, an engaging Challenge mode, and some decent multiplayer options, there's certainly no shortage of quality content.

Resident Evil 5 Boxshot
Resident Evil 5

Release Date: 18 September 09

Thirteen years ago, Capcom helped revolutionize the action adventure world with Resident Evil, a game that would define an entirely new genre dubbed "survival horror." In the years that followed, the series continued to build upon the standards set by the first game, Then, in 2005, Resident Evil 4 radically departed from its predecessors and broke new ground as a more action-oriented game. Resident Evil 5, the latest offering in the long-running series, expands on the action-heavy formula of its forerunner and is built from the ground up to support cooperative gameplay. Though it can no longer be considered a survival horror game, Resident Evil 5 manages to retain and effectively translate the most important aspect of that genre--tension--into its new mechanics. It crafts a fun, collaborative experience that will keep you on your toes the entire time.
